Abstract

Engineering properties of rocks are important to know for safe and economical drilling operations. The main engineering properties include shear modulus, bulk modulus, young’s modulus and poison’s ratio. Seismic stacking velocities calculated during seismic data processing are an effective source for the estimation of rock properties. Sonic logs that are run into boreholes can be correlated with seismic data of same wells. Castagna’s equations are used for Vs (shear velocity) determination from Vp (primary wave velocity) data. Cross plots are constructed between sonic and seismic data for knowing the correlation coefficients and erroneous data. After establishing correlation between seismic and sonic velocities the engineering properties are estimated using empirical relationships available in the literature. The mechanical properties of Khewra Sandstone encountered in Fortabbas and Bijnot wells are plotted against depth that can be further utilized in designing of drilling operations, borehole stress analysis and reservoir characterization.
