Effects of Fiber Glass Content on the Mechanical and Rheological Properties of Polyvinylchloride (PVC)-Short Glass Fiber Composites

Thermoplastic composite comprising polyvinylchloride (PVC) as resin and short glass fiber as reinforcement was prepared and characterized to study the effects of glass content on the various properties of the composite. PVC, short glass fiber and Maleic anhydride (coupling agent) were mixed at 140 oC in a mixer and subsequently, the composite was characterized by using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, mechanical properties testing, Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and melt flow index (MFI) measurements. The FTIR spectrum of the composite confirmed the presence of maleic anhydride in the composite. DSC thermograms and mechanical properties showed the influence of glass fiber content where melting transition temperature and ultimate tensile strength increased with the glass content of the composite. MFI also increased by increasing the reinforcement content of the composite.
