ONTOLOGY BASED INTELLIGENT WORK FLOW FOR TECHNICAL PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

Abstract


It is imperative to manage Technology Product Development (TPD) effectively if a business entity is to survive in highly completive and evolving technology oriented market. TPD is multi disciplinary and is governed by competing and dynamic requirements. This has led tp development of techniques which support and facilitate collaboration amongst various disciplines. TPD, owning to its interdisciplinary and dynamic nature is difficult to manage and co-ordinate. In our opinion, we feel that use of conventional management techniques is the single most reason for failure of new TPDs. Although workflow management systems have extensively been used to improve the management of these complex processes, they have been unable to successfully cope with the evolving and dynamic conditions faced in this evolutionary environment. As most of the engineering activities are concentrated in this class of dynamic, evolving, ad-hoc and collaborative processes, they are a suitable candidate for application of knowledge-based techniques. We strongly feel that these knowledge based techniques will provide better process management support in such dynamic area as they are more flexible and agile in nature.
