Estimation of Uniaxial Compressive Strength and Brazilian Tensile Strength from Block Punch Index

Abstract


Uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) of the rock material are important engineering parameters in designing of surface and underground structures in rocks. Direct determination of these strength properties requires rigid sample preparation, consumption of more time and cost as well. Whereas indirect methods are relatively faster, cheaper and convenient to perform. This study aims at determining UCS and BTS from block punch index (BPI) by developing possible correlations among themselves for dolerite rock from sillanwali area, Punjab-Pakistan. The results revealed increasing linear relationships between UCS and BTS with BPI. The validity of the developed relations was confirmed by using the concept of confidence interval of means and previous work of other investigators.
