An Investigation on Modification and Characterization of Environment Friendly Wheat Gluten based Packaging Films
Abstract
Calcium carbonate and titanium dioxide (0.5 g/100g gluten and 1 g /100g gluten) were tested as fillers to observe their effects on different mechanical and barrier properties of biodegradable films made from heated alkaline aqueous solution of wheat gluten, ethanol, and glycerol. Tensile Strength, % Extension and water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) were studied and compared for films with and without fillers. Addition of fillers resulted in enhancement in tensile strength and reduction in %extension, WVTR and water uptake. Titanium dioxide showed better results and its effect was further analyzed by FTIR, DSC, and Image analyzer.
